**Pros and Cons of Buying a 1968-70 Triumph T120 BSA A50/A65 Headlamp Rim (EMGO 6665062)**

### **Pros**

1. **Classic British Motorcycle Heritage** The Triumph T120 is an iconic British motorcycle, known for its timeless design, engineering, and cultural significance. Owning one allows you to ride a piece of automotive history.

2. **Strong Performance for Its Era** The BSA A50/A65 engine (a 500cc parallel-twin) was well-regarded for its smoothness, reliability, and decent power output for the time. With proper maintenance, it can still deliver enjoyable performance, especially on open roads.

3. **Modification Potential** The T120 platform is well-documented and has a strong aftermarket support system. You can upgrade components like the engine, suspension, brakes, and exhaust to improve performance and comfort.

4. **Reliability (With Care)** While not as robust as modern bikes, the T120 s mechanical simplicity means many issues are straightforward to diagnose and fix. With regular maintenance, it can last for many years.

5. **Nostalgia and Community** The classic motorcycle scene is vibrant, with clubs, rallies, and events where you can connect with like-minded enthusiasts. The T120 is a popular choice among vintage riders.

6. **Lower Running Costs (Compared to Modern Bikes)** Fuel, insurance, and maintenance are generally cheaper than for contemporary motorcycles, though parts can be pricey if sourced from specialists.

7. **Unique Aesthetic Appeal** The T120 s retro styling, with its round headlamp, classic fuel tank, and vintage detailing, stands out on the road and makes for striking photography.

8. **Potential for Restoration or Preservation** If you enjoy working on bikes, restoring or maintaining this motorcycle can be a rewarding hobby. Some owners prefer to keep them in original condition as period-correct machines.

---

### **Cons**

1. **Age and Wear** At 50 years old, the bike will likely show signs of wear, including rust, worn suspension, faded paint, and potential electrical issues. Restoration may be required before it s road-legal or comfortable.

2. **Maintenance Requirements** Classic bikes demand more attention than modern machines. You ll need to check fluids, adjust valves, maintain the carburetors, and inspect the chain, brakes, and suspension regularly. Rust can be a persistent issue, especially in humid climates.

3. **Parts Availability and Cost** While common, some parts (especially original Triumph/BSA components) can be expensive or difficult to find. Aftermarket parts exist but may not always match the original fit or feel.

4. **Performance Limitations** The A50/A65 engine is not as powerful as modern bikes, and acceleration will feel sluggish compared to contemporary standards. Top speeds are modest (around 90-100 mph on a good day), and high-speed stability may require careful riding.

5. **Safety Concerns** Modern safety standards (e.g., ABS, modern brakes, and frame rigidity) were not priorities in the 1960s. The T120 s braking system, suspension, and overall handling may not match today s expectations, increasing the risk of accidents.

6. **Insurance and Registration** Classic bikes often have higher insurance premiums due to their value and age. Some insurers may also require proof of maintenance or a restoration project to qualify for lower rates.

7. **Riding Comfort** The ergonomics of the T120 may not suit all riders. The riding position is upright but can be tiring on long rides, and the lack of modern suspension tuning means rough roads can be uncomfortable.

8. **Environmental and Legal Considerations** Older bikes may not meet current emissions or noise regulations in some regions, requiring modifications or special permits to ride legally.

9. **Resale Value Depends on Condition** While well-preserved T120s hold value, heavily restored or poorly maintained examples depreciate quickly. Buyers often prioritize originality or restoration quality.

10. **Time and Financial Commitment** Owning a classic bike is a long-term investment. You ll need to budget for storage, maintenance, and potential repairs, which can add up over time.

### **Conclusion and Recommendation**

The **1968-70 Triumph T120 BSA A50/A65** is a fantastic choice if you value **heritage, classic design, and the joy of riding a piece of motorcycle history**. It offers a unique riding experience that modern bikes cannot replicate, and its community provides endless opportunities for camaraderie and restoration projects.

However, it is **not a practical choice for casual riders or those seeking high performance, low maintenance, or modern safety features**. The bike requires **dedication, mechanical skill, and a willingness to invest time and money** into its upkeep. If you re not prepared for the challenges of owning a vintage machine such as rust, carburetor tuning, and occasional breakdowns it may be more trouble than it s worth.

#### **Recommendation:** - **Buy it if:**

- You are passionate about classic motorcycles and enjoy restoration or maintenance work.

- You plan to ride it occasionally (not daily) and prioritize nostalgia over convenience.

- You have access to mechanical knowledge or a trusted mechanic to assist with upkeep.

- You re prepared for higher long-term costs and potential reliability issues.

- **Avoid it if:**

- You expect a hassle-free, modern riding experience.

- You cannot commit to regular maintenance or storage (classic bikes left unused can deteriorate quickly).

- You re on a tight budget, as unexpected repairs can be costly.

- You prefer high-speed performance, advanced safety features, or comfort-focused riding.

**Final Verdict:** The Triumph T120 is a **fantastic investment for enthusiasts** who appreciate its legacy and are willing to put in the effort to keep it running. For most modern riders, however, it may be more of a hobby project than a practical daily ride. If you decide to buy one, **inspect it thoroughly, budget for restoration, and enjoy the journey of bringing this classic back to life.**
